It bugs me at how wound up I get at childish social media posts.
Okay, it bugs me when young boys post demeaning things about girls.
I saw a post that said:
Women hardly ever have real attitudes. 90% of their “problems” can be fixed by dick, food or attention. Or a combination of the three.[Insert Eye Roll]
I felt like that Arthur meme when he’s clenching his fist, as I stopped myself from writing three paragraphs about how insulting that is. I am yet to retaliate. Doubt I will, it’s been three days or something.
About six months ago, I would have just asked questions. Like:
-That’s interesting, do you agree with the post?
-I wonder, can you see the other side of the coin to this?
-Do you know of any problems that haven’t be solved by the three above?
Those questions come across as condescending don’t they? Suppose that’s the point. But then I get frustrated with their answers cause I don’t know if they’re being honest or reeling me in for more just for funsies. Either way, I enter into a conversation that just puts me in a shit mood.
So, I mean, let’s just break this down a bit:
Women hardly ever have real attitudes.
What’s not real about the way we think or feel about stuff? So, do we not love, laugh, get angry, cry or feel pain?
90% of their “problems”
-Why is the word, problems, in quotations? Do women define the word, problems, incorrectly? Are women so superior that we don’t have problems at all? It’s unexplained.
-I wonder what the 10% of unquoted problems are…
…can be fixed by dick, food or attention.
Oh I see…so if I note down some of women’s problems, we can see if in fact the solution is either, a dick, food or attention…
-Beauty standards imposed by the male gaze and the patriarchy
-Rape (Men can experience rape too.)
But wait, not all women go through these problems…does that make those people any less of a woman? There are also lots of problems that women face that men can face too…is that the 10% of unquoted problems that I skipped over earlier? So, when men can face these problems too, that’s when the problems are validated as unquoted problems? Think I’ve sussed it.
Or a combination of the three.
So, if you try one at a time and they all fail independently, just do all three at once and we’ll be okay? Like, let me hold a dick whilst I eat chocolate and you talk to me about my favourite tv show…is that what it means?
I mean, don’t get me wrong, for me, anything that makes itself gender specific is uncomfortable, especially if it’s unkind. For instance, having that shit cake topper that shows the husband being wankered and the wife dragging him away with an angry face is probably the worse thing I could imagine at a wedding. The worse.
I guess I’m more prone to seeing women stereotypes printed on t-shirts, mugs and posters than I am to seeing men. Is this because they’re more offensive? I’m more aware of my gender being portrayed?
Even the ones that seem nice are so fucking crap.
